About Us

December 31st 2005 was the last night for the popular and fun Pelican Club in Cape May. It was our landlord’s decision to turn that space into condominium units (a trend that is all too familiar on the east coast shore towns, but that is a whole different story), so we (the Pelican Club Family) had to move on. Opportunity arose and we were able to secure a lease at the site of the former Anchorage Inn (and one season as Restaurant 1919). We knew right away of the concept we wanted to do; a casual restaurant where the food was made from scratch, the drinks made well, and the service and atmosphere warm and fun. This is Lucky Bones Backwater Grille.

Behind The Name

Lucky Bones Backwater Grille traces its name back to the days when Cape Island was a whaling village and when superstitious sailors never set sail on Friday. These brave watermen would stow away good luck charms to protect them from the perils of the mighty sea. The "LUCKY BONE" refers to the odd hook-like claw found only on male horseshoe crabs it was worn by these men to keep them safe between the wind and the frightening mighty water, so they may return safe to their loved ones at home

Why Eat at Lucky Bones?

We are very proud that all our food has Zero Trans Fat. Our soups, sauces and desserts are all made from scratch. We cut our own Nachos & Fries. We make our pizza dough from a secret recipe so that when we bake it in our Brick Oven, the pizza crust stays thin and delicious. We make our own guacamole from the ripest avocados. We mold our own hamburgers, and use the freshest produce for your salad.

We opened this new kind of restaurant so our neighbors and our visitors can enjoy the foods they like to eat. But when they eat here, they are eating delicious food made from scratch, not out of the box.

If you like reasonably priced good food, that doesn't have to be fancy, try us. We guarantee you have not experienced a restaurant quite like Lucky Bones.
